PhD studies in the field of
Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering

PhD studies are a natural completion to the first and second level degree studies, therefore in the complete education scheme offered by the AGH University of Science and Technology in education of biomedical engineering professionals such a third level degree studies cannot be missing. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Automatics, Computer Science and Electronics has completed the preparation of such courses, which are now being introduced to the educational offer, starting from October 2009, as post-graduate (PhD) studies in the field of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering.
fig1These third level degree (PhD) studies are dedicated for persons who have earned a M.D. professional diploma or M.Sc. / M.Sc. Eng degree and are interested in applications of various technical disciplines as well as inter-disciplinary solutions in biology and medicine. The enrollment procedure is based on the qualification examination. The regular schedule of the study covers four years and it is being supervised by the Scientific Board of EEACS Faculty, which is among four scientific institutions in Poland entitled to award PhD degrees in technical sciences in the discipline of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering.
fig2The list of courses is mainly focused on medical electronics and computer science, metrology and automatic control of medical equipment but it also includes courses taught by specialists from other AGH faculties (e.g. in the fields of biomaterials, biophysics and biomechanics) or from our medical research partners. The study track is intended to ensure that the PhD student in addition to surveying a wide scope of recent theoretical and technical knowledge will practically recognize the expectations of medical community and will be trained in the field of present and expected future range of technology applications in medicine.
fig3 The new educational offer is mainly directed towards young, motivated persons, with a university (MSc.) diploma from a technical or biomedical faculty, sharing the humanistic idea of technology at the service of basic needs of mankind. An important motivation for taking up the PhD studies in the discipline of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering may be also the need to bring help to other people. The persons taking up such a type of post-graduate studies may expect extraordinary satisfaction resulting from the direct contribution to improvement of the life quality and duration of individual persons, as well as to the modernization of the whole national health-care system, the development of medical technologies in the international scale and the enhancement of cognitive capabilities of biomedical sciences as such. During the studies the attitudes that will be specially supported and appreciated should include creativity and general competence in technological aspects as well as special empathy for human needs in situations, in which a medical engineer, performing his/her noble duties at the side of a physician, is able to (and should) be helpful: giving birth, experiencing disability, illness and finally death.
fig4The accepted PhD students, under the supervision of their individual scientific supervisors, will conduct research in the fields of biocybernetics, biomedical engineering, analytical and numerical modeling of tissues, organs and whole living organisms as well as selected aspects of biological and medical applications of the latest technological achievements. Samples of the research work being realized can be found in the webpage of Biocybernetics Lab or in the publications lists of the Head of the PhD Studies: and other staff members of the Faculty. The PhD students by carrying out bibliographical studies and by the experimental tasks performed at first under supervision of experience researchers and later on their own, gather the professional research skills, necessary in their later research work, at the same time collecting and enhancing their scientific curriculum. In addition to individual research work and browsing through the unique literature resources available at the Faculty, the PhD students take part in the study’s regular activities (lectures, seminars etc. – including about 120 hours/units in a semester) and practice their future academic duties by doing classes with students of the first and second level degree studies (the exact hour limit of the academic duty is specified by the Dean). The post-graduate students also take part in the research programs carried out in cooperation with other academic and industrial centers as well as with the home and foreign health-care institutions.
fig5During PhD studies each student opens the doctoral procedure at the Scientific Board of EEACS Faculty and prepares the PhD thesis under the supervision of his/her scientific advisor. For the post-graduate students the opening and proceeding the doctoral procedure is considerably facilitated and is free from any extra charges – in contrary to the persons who apply for the PhD degree by other available paths.
Candidates are expected to pass an oral qualification examination, covering their discipline subject, in front of the qualification commission and a separate exam in one selected foreign language. A detailed topical scope of the examination, its time-schedule and the information concerning the necessary documents and the PhD studies application form, as well as some complementary information, will be available from Ms. Jolanta Lepiarczyk, AGH, B1 building, room 22 (tel. +4812-617-39-16), e_mail: lepiarcz@agh.edu.pl.
The persons applying for PhD studies qualification are expected to present a written consent of one of the EEACS Faculty Professors or staff members having at least a DSc (habilitation) degree for accepting the position of their scientific supervisor. In individual cases similar consents will be also accepted from exceptional scientists professionally active in the field of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering in other scientific institutions home and abroad.
